I’ve been through a lot in my life. So what I hear you say. Well because it means I’ve experience of hard times and had to overcome obstacles and difficulties, and I’m human. I’ve had severe anxiety and panic attacks – although I didn’t know what it was at the time – due to stress and burn out – and I’ve overcome it.
My crisis happened a few years ago in the middle of an ordinary workday. I’d made a simple mistake that shouldn’t have phased me at all. But it did. I was in the ladies, crying, shaking, heart pounding, sweating, thoughts racing. I was very scared – I didn’t know what was happening. I thought I was losing my mind. I wasn’t. What was happening was a panic attack because my anxiety and stress levels had gone through the roof.
It’d been creeping up for some time, but I’d ignored it and thought I was coping, but deep down I knew things weren’t right. I’d lost my joy, felt fearful most of the time, sick, sometimes quite dreamy and detached. I thought there was something innately wrong with me or that I simply didn’t have the capacity to be happy. I was nervous all the time, agonising about anything and everything. I tried to control people and things too much because that made me feel more secure, but it caused problems in my relationships.
I’d tried self-medicating, alternative therapies, lavender oils, supplements – anything in a bid to feel better, feel ‘normal’.
But that day frightened me into doing something about it because I knew I couldn’t go on as I was. It was really hard to admit to myself and others that I wasn’t coping, but I really had no choice, I’d hit the wall.
My GP was sympathetic but could only prescribe CBT and medication, both of which were of limited help to me. So I decided to help myself, to take control. I became an expert on myself and on anxiety. I studied Neuroscience, Positive Psychology, Stress Management, Anxiety Reduction, Mindfulness, Cognitive Hypnotherapy, Neurolinguistic Programming and much more. I studied with recognised institutions, devoured the research and the received wisdom on the subject.
And I reflected on my life experiences and what I could learn from them.
I drew from the best of all the therapies and found what works; how to challenge unhelpful, negative thinking and turn off the incessant chatter that we all have in our heads that just makes the anxiety worse or even causes it. I learned about panic attacks and stress and how they’re related and how they can be helped.
Today I’m more resilient, relaxed and confident than I ever was. I have my toolkit of techniques which means I cope so much better when life throws a spanner in the works. And my passion is to pass on this knowledge and life experience so that you can benefit from it too, to control your anxiety and stress in a more helpful way, whatever the cause.
Because life will throw you challenges and obstacles. There’ll always be problems we need to overcome, things that make us wobble. But we can get better at coping so that we can get on with life.
I want to work with you so that you don’t have to work it out all by yourself and you don’t have to feel that nothing can change. Because I know it can.
It’s possible for anyone to dump old, unhelpful ways of being, to live their best lives and go forward into the future with confidence and courage.
